Dear Parents,

WELCOME TO FOURTH GRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are excited about this year and the learning we expect to take place. This is an important year for your child. There is a significant amount of material to be covered based on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for fourth grade. In order to master all of it, we expect to work vigorously on developing such skills as independence, responsibility, strong organizational skills, and self-discipline. As we begin this year's instruction, we want to share some important information with you about our team and classroom operations.

DISCIPLINE

To create and maintain a positive learning environment for all students, we expect students to assume responsibility for their own behavior.  This helps create an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation that fosters optimal conditions for learning.  Rules will be posted, explained, and enforced.  Following the rules will result in positive outcomes, whereas failure to follow the rules will result in certain logical consequences.

Our SCHOOL RULES are:

  • Follow directions the first time given.
  • Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.
  • Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  • Respect the feelings of others.
  • Be honest.
  • Respect the cleanliness of your classrooms.

Our POSITIVE OUTCOMES are:

  • A safe, quiet classroom
  • Good notes or calls home
  • “Free time” activity choices
  • Other options at the teacher’s discretion

Our LOGICAL CONSEQUENCES are:

  • Warning
  • Time out
  • Loss of privileges
  • Note or call home
  • Office referral

HOMEWORK

Homework is an important part of your child’s school experience.  It helps with the development of organizational skills, a sense of responsibility, and mastery of academic skills and knowledge.  Your child will benefit greatly from your support and encouragement at home.  Providing supplies, a quiet workspace, and generous support can foster this effort.  When you check your child’s planner nightly, you can ensure that all assignments are completed.  In addition, you will be aware of any notes from your child’s teacher(s).

Homework will be assigned nightly (Monday-Thursday).

SUPPLIES

All students need the required supplies in order for us to proceed with our instruction.  If you are having difficulty providing any of your child’s supplies for any reason, please contact us immediately.  In addition, as the year progresses, please check frequently for any materials that need to be replenished.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year!  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.  We are eager to establish and maintain open communication between school and home.  We can be reached at 443-5301 or by e-mail through the school web site.  Once again, we look forward to our partnership in your child’s education!
