Career Development

In elementary school, it is important that students begin to develop career awareness. Students begin this process by developing an awareness of self, and exploring their hobbies and interests. In the classroom traditional and non-traditional jobs are introduced and explored.

In the spring TES holds its annual Career Day. Parents and members from the community come to the school to share their careers with students.

Career Day Held At TES

On June 11 th Tappahannock Elementary School held its annual career day. In elementary school, it is very important that students develop career awareness and begin exploring traditional and non-traditional jobs available to them. Students from pre k through fourth grade participated in the event. Parents and volunteers in the community shared their careers with students. The event included approximately 25 speakers who were arranged by grade level. The speakers, who were located indoors and outdoors, spoke about their career, interacted with students, and shared the importance of education. They emphasized how subjects such as math, science, history, and reading were used in their jobs on a daily basis.

The highlight of the morning was a helicopter landing in the school yard at 9:00 am. Students were given the opportunity to learn about and “get up close and personal” with the helicopter and other vehicles such as, a fire truck, an ambulance, a police car, and a concrete mixer. Inside, students learned about a broad range of careers, including a firefighter, EMT, concrete contractor, social work, historic preservation, veterinarian, forestry, military, banking, marketing, detective, electrician, radio, helicopter technician, and homeland security. By the end of the day they could see how their own education could be linked those careers. Career Day at TES was a huge success this year because of the help of parents, staff, and community volunteers.
